The NewBridge Project, Gateshead, 2019

Working Solution was a response to an invitation to make a work for a group exhibition about contemporary labour issues at the NewBridge Project in Gateshead. It resulted in an interrogation into the lack of women and non-binary people of colour within the exhibition, and then about the similar lack of representation, or lack of power, of these groups in the workplace in general.

Our response comprised three elements: firstly, a performative service as a resource table; secondly, a library of resources comprising writing by women and non-binary people of colour relating to their experiences of the workplace, to white privilege, and to intersectional feminism more broadly; and thirdly, a sculptural installation, including an announcement that Jarsdell Solutions Ltd was placing its operations on hold, ‘whilst it actively investigates the varying levels of privilege in its workforce, and the ways in which it fits into systems of oppression, particularly (but not exclusively) along lines of race and gender’.
